Introduction |
In collaboration with the 'Sheffield Diploma Consortium,' the Sheffield College was successful with a MoLeNET3 bid (2009/10). We are working with a six local schools – All Saints, Chaucer, City, Myers Grove, Stocksbridge and Wisewood. We were also successful with a bid to become a MoleNET Academy.
This case study concerns the use of Qwizdom voting devices with Carpentry and Joinery students.

Aims |
The team wished to further engage students within the classroom. The students are level 2 Carpentry and Joinery students who can often be challenging. The initial idea of using Quizdom was to try to reward the students for good behaviour, although the quiz created was relevant to the subject area being taught.

Addressing the challenge
• Qwizdom was made available to the Carpentry and Joinery team at Sheffield City College.
• Learners have taken part in quizzes to check if learning had taken place by using the hand held voting devices to submit answers to pre-prepared questions. The responses are recorded and their progress is fed back to them in the form of a game (racing cars). This has created healthy competition within the group as well as requiring the students to meet their learning objectives.
• An online training session, led by Qwizdom staff (based in Ireland) took place at our MoLeNET Academy – two of our lecturers taking part. |

Outcomes and reactions
• The use of Qwizdom engaged a large number of learners. As there are 20 handsets each learner was assigned an individual handset.
• Each learners progress is monitored against the learning objectives set by the teacher and the results are tracked throughout the game.
• Students gave a positive response to the use of Qwizdom. |

Impact on teaching and learning
• Although there are other variables, the students who used the Qwizdom got better results in their final exam compared to a group who had not been involved with Qwizdom.
• Students were more engaged with their learning when they knew that Qwizdom was being used.
• Students were more active and contributed more towards the lesson.
• The tutor facilitated the lesson but session soon became more student led. |

Learner's reaction
• Learners are very positive in their reaction to the introduction of this technology.
• One student even suggested that they could create the content for future Qwizdom sessions.
• Students are requesting the use of Qwizdom for future lessons (they enjoyed using it that much)
